5 Tips Singers Need to Know Before Recording a Song Suzy S. Is recording a song one of your goals as a singer? Its an amazing feeling to pour your heart out and have a finished product to be proud of! Here, Brooklyn, NY teacher  Liz T.  shares some important tips to remember before you head into the studio Before going into a studio to record vocals for a song, it’s important that you prepare yourself to make the best use of your time! Recording a song in a studio can be quite expensive, because most are rented by the hour so here are some tips for singers on how to make the most of your upcoming recording session! 1) Research recording studios First, do a little research on the recording studios in your area, or engineers you are going to be working with before you go into the studio. Make sure you have talked about all fees and how much time you will have, and if that includes setup and breakdown. How will you get your recording after? What kind of equipment do they have? Don’t be afraid to ask questions! You don’t want to show up on the big day and be surprised they don’t have the microphone you had hoped for! Also, see if you can listen to some of the work they have produced beforehand, to get an idea of the recording quality. 2) Make a plan Go into the studio with a specific goal in mind! For example: “Today I’m going to do just vocals for one song, or vocals and guitar on the chorus.” Keep your plan as simple as possible, and make sure your goal is clear and concise. Write it out, and share it with your engineer or producer before going in, so everyone is on the same page! It also helps to send them a rough version of the song before, with a lyrics/lead sheet. 3) Have your track ready If you are recording vocals over a pre-existing track, it’s a wise idea to send the mp3 to your engineer beforehand, to make sure it will work in the studio. If you are going to be recording the track from scratch, take your time and record one instrument at a time. If you do not have your full band track ready to record over, you can still record your song with a solo piano or guitar track. 4) Always allow for more time Don’t go into the studio rushed or pressured to record in a short amount of time. Have some extra time available, so that if you do go over a little bit you don’t have to worry. Usually two hours per song and per instrument is sufficient to get in multiple takes. Everything always takes longer in recording than we think, due to circumstances beyond your control (engineers setting up, testing levels, finding the right microphone, etc.). So book yourself extra time, and if you end up having free time at the end, use it for another song! 5) Work with your vocal coach Make sure you prepare with your vocal coach beforehand, or even see if he or she can come into the studio with you as youre recording your song! You want to be at your vocal best on the day of the session, and practicing the music with your teacher will put you ahead of the game (and impress the producers/engineers)! Recording a song requires a bit of different training than performing live on stage, and there are specific techniques that your vocal coach can teach you. If you follow these tips, I ensure you will be very pleased with the outcome of your recording. As a singer, always remember to bring water and wear comfortable shoes, as you will be on your feet for a while. It’s also best to warm up before you go into the studio, so you are ready to go. Finally, remember to get plenty of rest the night before, and avoid any alcohol, which dries out your voice. Enjoy your vocal recording session! There are a number of Japanese things that actually originated from China or Chinese culture.Written Chinese is thought to have made its way to Japan as early as the 4th century. However, there are claims that  Japan had its own writing system known as jindai moji but most evidence appears to be forgeries since examples of the writing system have been based on Modern Japanese, which has fewer vowels than its Old Japanese.Additionally, there are even texts written around the time using the Chinese characters that state that there was no such writing system in Japan before the Chinese characters were brought over. Scholars also believe that it seems highly unlikely that the Japanese would abandon such a writing system so quickly just because the Chinese introduced another one.On the other hand, there are also texts in existence written usi ng the jindai moji from the time period they would have been used and during the 19th century, there were claims that examples of ancient writing had been found.Whatever the truth is, the Chinese characters were widely adopted and although only  the upper echelons of Japanese society learnt Chinese and wrote Chinese characters in order to communicate with one another, that would soon change.Chinese made its most important marks on Japan and Japanese culture between the 6th century during the times of Asuka and Nara and the 12th century during the Heian period.The presence of Chinese in the heart of the Land of the Rising Sun can still be seen most clearly in the written language as many Chinese characters are still present in written Japanese .Also learn about the Chinese phonetic writing system...  These Chinese characters, which are known as Kanji in Japanese, are used alongside Japan’s two other writing systems, Hiragana and Katakana, which are used for grammatical words and th e transcription of foreign words.While often, and rightly, seen as a country in its own right, Japan remains heavily associated with Chinese culture. You must start small, meaning light vocalization (think humming and lip trills). Never force the voice. If anything still hurts, that means your folds are still inflamed, so go back to resting! Lastly, always keep yourself hydrated. Another excellent remedy for how to get your voice back is simply inhaling steam. After about two weeks, your voice will start sounding a lot more normal, and feeling much better! Remember to be patient. Check out her review of her alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Rebekah: I attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. It is located in the heart of Provo which is a bigger town, but the university is what drives its economy. Getting around Provo is extremely easy for students. Students have to live within a mile radius of campus, so walking to school is always an option; however, the bus system is reliable and free for students. Many students survive without a bike or car at the school. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Rebekah: One thing I loved about attending BYU was the availability of the professors. They all have office hours and love meeting with students to help them with any questions or concerns. There are extremely large general classes with upwards of 1,000 students in them, so those professors might be more difficult to get in touch with; however, those classes have several teaching assistants who are available to help as well. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Rebekah: There are two different options for on-campus housing: housing with kitchens and housing without. The school is in the middle of rebuilding the kitchen dorms (Heritage Halls), so they are brand new buildings with more room and upgraded features. The other dorms were recently rebuilt or remodeled as well. Dorm life is awesome if you are a freshman. The majority of students living in the dorms are freshman who love life, stay up late, and enjoy their new college adventure. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Rebekah: BYUs Business School is highly ranked, especially its Accounting program. It also has a well-known and respected Engineering program. Although, you really cant go wrong with the major you choose. All of the majors are well-respected, and the school as a whole is well-known and highly favored in every field. I studied Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations. It was a great experience with hands-on, real-life application as well as fantastic support from all professors involved. As a general rule, each major has some sort of internship and/or capstone project which gives students a flavor of what life will be like after school. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Rebekah: Meeting people at BYU is extremely easy. As I mentioned previously, nearly all freshmen live in the dorms and dorms basically force you to meet people since you share common areas. Also, BYU is predominately attended by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which means most of the students attend church with each other. Through church and church activities, it makes meeting others even easier. Business Insider recently ranked BYU #1 for a university where students are both hot and smart, and as part of the description of the university, it stated everyone is very friendly, and it's not uncommon to strike up a conversation with a perfect stranger. BYU has a strict honor code which deters Greek life, so it definitely does not play a significant role in the social life there. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Rebekah: Students can set up an appointment with the Career Center at any time. It is well staffed and helpful for all students, even those who need guidance as to which career would best suit them. Every year, they have several career fairs bringing in companies from all over the country, including General Mills, various school districts, top accounting and consulting firms, as well as others. Basically, each college at the university has its own career fair at some point throughout the year. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Rebekah: BYU has one of the best libraries in the country. While I was at BYU, it was consistently ranked #1 in the nation. It has everything a student needs, including ample study areas, rooms, and computers. All dorms have lounges, but I imagine they can be noisy, so most students prefer to study at the library or in their bedrooms. There are also plenty of study areas in every building on campus. Students tend to find their study space they like to frequent. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Rebekah: Provo basically caters to BYU since it is the economic center of Provo. Provo is located at the base of the Wasatch mountains, so there is plenty of outdoor fun to be had: hiking, biking, camping, fishing, boating, etc. Students also often take advantage of the great variety of restaurants and shopping in the area. There is always something to do in Provo whether its attending an event on campus, a local party, or going out on the town. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Rebekah: There are close to 29,000 undergrad students who attend BYU. General classes tend to be huge, but some sections offered are on the smaller side. Regardless of the class size, the university staffs the class with adequate TA numbers and extra support so students can always reach some type of expert to help them with the subject matter. As students get into their major specific courses, class sizes greatly shrink. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Rebekah: I absolutely loved my experience at BYU and hope to send my own children there. I cant pinpoint one memorable experience because I had so many. Honestly, the majority of the professors I had were fantastic, well-spoken, and passionate about the subject matter. You can find videos, songs and T-shirts to mark the occasion. Many also count it as a day to eat lots of pie. Why is the number Pi, denoted by the Greek letter p and pronounced “pie,” worthy of so much praise? Pi   is one of the most common constants in all of mathematics. It is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter or approximately 3.1415926. This year, the day is even more special since it’s 3-14-15. According to PiDay.org, Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize, and to computationally calculate more and more digits. Otherwise, you could pay for that yourself but this can be an expensive option. Consider alternatives For some students, their results are going to come as a big shock to them. If there’s nothing suitable in clearing, maybe consider taking  a gap year. You could get a job to earn some extra money, volunteer with a charity or even go travelling. If you don’t get into your first choice of university, alternative options should be considered. You could always get onto an  Apprenticeship scheme  where you can work for a major corporation or firm and get ahead of your peers by the time they graduate.  City and Guilds apprenticeships  are also an option that offer in-work training with professional qualifications.
